This studio explores new roles for architectural character in the production of a midrise cultural center building. Through a series of five exercises, each project develops through the combination of two previously distinct tropes: buildings with character and buildings as characters. The resulting “conflicted characters” are siblings of the decorated figures R.E. Somol identifies in “Green Dots 101.” However, rather than eschewing “hot,” surrealist collage, this studio embraces it. Multiple scales, overlapping ornamental compositions, misprojections, awkward proportions, and stooping postures all contribute to a series of objects caught between a monument and a cartoon character.
