The School of Architecture is organizing a trip to Barcelona, Spain during the University's 2020 Spring Break.
Trip Dates: March 21-29, 2020
Count on a packed week of architectural activity and site-seeing! The group will visit important historical sites by Gaudi including La Sagrada Família, Casa Mila, and Park Guell as well as Mies's Barcelona Pavilion, Monjuic, and more. Some of the contemporary site stops will include the Forum Building by Herzog & de Meuron, CCCB Building by Albert Viaplana, and the Santa Caterina Market by Eric Miralles. There will also be a visit to an architecture firm and/or a University in Barcelona. A full itinerary will be shared at the Trip Orientation Meeting on Feb. 21.
The trip will be planned and facilitited by School of Architecture faculty members Julia Capomaggi and Aura Venckunaite, both of whom have spent significant time in and around Barcelona. Aura led another Barcelona trip for the School in 2017. The trip is open to current students in the UIC School of Architecture only.
Program Fee of $650 will be required to be paid to the School of Architecture (see payment schedule with dates below). This Program Fee will cover housing, entrance fees to activities, and the itinerary organized and led by School of Architecture faculty members.
Additionally, students will be directly responsible for the following costs: airfare, local transportation and food, internatioanl health insurance, and passport application fees (if applicable). Depending on personal costs, students should expect the total trip to cost $1,750-$2,150.
The School has a limited amount of scholarship funding available to partially support students attending the trip. The application is due Monday, January 20 at 11:59 PM. Award decisions will be made by Friday, January 24. Scholarship preference will be given to students who have not studied or travelled abroad from the U.S. or their home country in the past and students with strong academic standing.
Funds will be applied to student accounts for the Spring 2020 semester. Students with no balances at the time of payment may be eligible to receive the scholarship funding as a tuition refund.
In order to secure a space on the trip, students must complete the Intent to Participate form and $150 Deposit by Friday, January 31 at 11:59 PM.
