Tijana Mačkić named 2026–27 Garofalo Fellow

We are pleased to announce Tijana Mačkić as the 2026–27 Douglas A. Garofalo Fellow. Throughout the fellowship year, Mačkić will teach design studios and courses in history and theory while advancing her ongoing research into architectural reference and its transformation within contemporary digital culture.

Tijana Mačkić is an architect, researcher, and educator based in Belgrade. In 2025, she completed her PhD at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade, with the dissertation The Role of Reference in the Design and Interpretation of Contemporary Architecture in the Digital Environment. Her research is situated at the intersection of architectural practice and poststructuralist theory, tracing the evolution from intertextual to hypertextual models of referential association within contemporary digital culture.

Since 2017, Mačkić has taught theoretical and design-based courses in a range of academic contexts. As a member of TEN, an association dedicated to architecture, design, and open research on the built environment, she has contributed to the design studio Archive of Real Socialism: Belgrade as a guest professor at TU Wien, and to the experimental studio In/Appropriate Technology at ETH Zürich. Alongside her teaching and research, she maintains an active design practice spanning multiple fields and scales.
