HiArch: Summer Architecture Workshop
Week 1: July 15-19, 2019
Week 2, Model-Making Workshop: July 22-26, 2019
The program meets at the School of Architecture on UIC's campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Students can either register for Week 1 independently, or both Weeks 1 & 2 in combination. Week 2 is only open to students who have participated in Week 1 in previous summers. Program registration includes all materials and supplies as well as lunch daily. Personal computers are encouraged but not required; see Personal Computer Requirements document.
Participants will work through a series of studio projects using handmade and digital media, as well as digital fabrication technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting. There will be time at the end of the day to discuss each student's efforts with fellow participants and the faculty. Week 1 activities will include digital drafting. Students can either bring a personal laptop to use each day during Week 1, or elect to borrow a University computer for program activities. There is no homework—instructors will assign only what can be completed by the end of each day in studio.
Week 2: Model Workshop
This model-building workshop is open to high school students who have participated in HiArch in previous summers, as well as new students looking to enroll in the program for a full two weeks. Utilizing UIC’s advanced wood, metal, and digital fabrication facilities, participants in this hands-on studio will learn a variety of model-making techniques. In-depth workshops, demonstrations, and experimentation sessions will help students become familiar with the types of tools and technologies that are used in the field of architecture. The Model Workshop also includes guest presentations by local fabricators and designers. There will be time at the end of the day to discuss each student's efforts with fellow participants and the faculty. There is no homework—instructors will assign only what can be completed by the end of each day in studio.
