Silicon Island: Urban Design in the Digital Economy

In 2013, UI LABS, a government-backed not-for-profit based in Chicago, was awarded a $70-million grant from the Pentagon to establish a Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) in a former Wrigley candy factory on Goose Island. The Goose Island project demonstrates that state and municipal governments are increasingly looking to leverage university-driven technology transfer programs for their potentially transformative economic and demographic implications. It is within this context that this studio considers the transformative urbanistic potentials of Chicago’s pursuit of digital manufacturing industries and tech office space while speculating on their implications for the possible urbanistic future of Goose Island and its surroundings.
