Breakthrough: Housing Futures, organized and curated by Alexander Eisenschmidt, creates an experimental living room and learning space for conversations about affordable housing futures, past and present.
The exhibition blends historical documentation of ambitious HUD demonstration projects from the 1970s with new prototypes from The Housing Futures Initiative. It aims to challenge the social, cultural, and economic conventions of housing by rethinking the design, material, and construction of urban living.
Breakthrough will be on view at the National Public Housing Museum from November 19, 2025, to April 19, 2026, and is presented as part of the sixth edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change.
