Lecture: Sam Jacob, “Hysterical Realism”

Join us for the third lecture of our fall series by Adjunct Professor Sam Jacob. Jacob's lecture will explore how ideas and concepts shape his design projects. How undercurrents, traces of history, and narratives are starting points for design strategies that imaginatively transform everyday bits of city, buildings, and objects. How the very real act of architecture is also a medium through which ideas become things and things act as social speculation. Associate Professor Kelly Bair will lead a conversation after the lecture.
Sam Jacob is the founder of Sam Jacob Studio for architecture and design. His projects embody stories, sensations, and feelings in space, form, and material. Past projects include nightclubs, social housing, community centers, parks, museums, TV studios, and exhibition designs. He was a professor of architecture at UIC from 2008 to 2023 and an incoming professor at the Angewandte, Vienna. Sam was a co-curator of the British Pavilion in Venice and an Art Review columnist. Previously, Sam was a founding director of FAT Architecture.
