Cédric Van Parys, Sentinels: Iron Portals of Chicagoland
Garofalo Fellowship series, vol. 1
Open Archive Publications
Designed by Lu Liang / The Exercises
Join us for the launch of the first book in a series that re-presents and extends Garofalo Fellowship research, published by the Architecture and Design Open Archive.
During his time as the 2023–24 Garofalo Fellow at UIC, Cédric Van Parys became fascinated by billboard structures, not as modes of communication but as standardized yet singular, even dignified, units of urban infrastructure. “Sentinels” pairs photographs of the backs of billboards with advertising sales copy to parse how these structures relate to the city and construct meaning—especially their latent monumental qualities. The book includes a conversation between Van Parys and Professor Paul Preissner and an essay by the curator Sevie Tsampalla.
At the launch, the graphic designer Lu Liang will discuss the development of the series’s graphic concept. Copies of the book will be available for purchase; refreshments are free.
We look forward to seeing you there!
