Clinical Assistant Professor Barbara Materia designed the exhibition Van Gogh And The Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape, which opened at the Art Institute of Chicago earlier this month. The exhibition presents over seventy works by Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Emile Bernard, Charles Angrand, and Vincent van Gogh from the intensely creative period between 1882 and 1890, with a variety of dreamy, picturesque, and industrial landscapes achieved by intense experimentation and use of different painting and drawing techniques, bright and intense colors.
A cluster of hidden inset rooms, distinct in size and form, openings and views, alternating paths, and curves engage visitors to meander through the space. The show is open through September 4.
