Joseline Toalongo wins HOK Diversity by Design Scholarship
Joseline Toalongo, a fourth-year undergraduate architecture student, was awarded the 2024 HOK Diversity by Design Scholarship for this academic year. The scholarship program is intended to foster greater diversity within the architectural profession by granting $100,000 in scholarships to 10 outstanding students from universities known for their dedication to educating diverse design students. The Diversity by Design program has consistently grown since its launch in 2021. HOK has invested a cumulative total of $370,000 into the initiative. The firm aims to empower the next generation of diverse design leaders and create a profession that truly reflects the communities it serves.
Born in Cuenca, Ecuador, Joseline is interested in sustainable design practices and their impact on communities. She hopes to work on projects that prioritize eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies to create healthier environments that enhance quality of life. Of her future aspirations, she shares, “I aim to inspire young Latina women to advocate for their career aspirations, empowering them to achieve both financial and personal independence.”
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to HOK for providing me with essential financial support that motivates me to excel in my academic pursuits in architecture. I am deeply honored for the support and recognition, and I look forward to making the most of this opportunity to further my education and contribute positively to my community. Thank you for believing in my potential.”
The School of Architecture is grateful for HOK’s ongoing partnership and meaningful impact on our students. Joseline is UIC’s fourth recipient of the Diversity by Design Scholarship. The application for the 2025 scholarship is open now.
